Kazungula Bridge Construction Complete
(Victoria Falls)
Kazungula Bridge - October 2020
19 October 2020
Construction of the Kazungula Bridge along the Zambezi River was completed earlier this month, after 6 years of work. Although there were a few delays, the project progressed steadily from 2014, and the 923m rail and road bridge will soon be ready for use.
The bridge is located at the Kazungula Crossing between Zambia and Botswana where the Kazungula Ferry operates, and use of this bridge means that the drama and delays associated with using the ferry will be a thing of the past. The cable-stayed bridge is 65kms upstream from the Victoria Falls at the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers.
On either side of the bridge there are one-stop border facilities housing both Botswana and Zambia immigration services. Construction of both of these border posts are more than 98% complete, and are expected to be ready for use by the beginning of November 2020. Once these phase 2 and phase 3 of the project are ready, the bridge will be open to the public.
Existence of this bridge means that visitors to Livingstone in Zambia can easily cross into Botswana's Chobe region and vice versa. Self-driving between the two countries will become more convenient and enjoyable.
The Kazungula Bridge Project is a multi-national project financed by the governments of Zambia and Botswana.
