What's Hot in Victoria Falls
Newly done Nkosi Guest Lodge
3 September 2021 More than a year ago, we were all forced by circumstance to slam the breaks on everything and adjust to a way of life that is rather unnatural, especially for those who love the outdoors, socialising, seeing the world, can't stand being couped up... In Victoria Falls, like the rest of the world, pretty much everything shut down and borders were closed. It was the first time we saw gates that are always open during the day, close - quite a sombre feeling. The silence of not hearing the helicopters and microlights made the situation even more real. Skip to a few months in and things slowly started to open up. While borders were still closed, a few Zimbabwe activities started up again. Zimbabwe residents enjoyed a few discounted activities as well as special accommodation rates. Presently, the two borders around the city of Victoria Falls are open to vaccinated tourists – the Kazungula Border with Botswana and the Victoria Falls Bridge Border with Zambia. This means that those who are vaccinated and with valid PCR tests can now enjoy trips to Chobe and Zambia activities while they stay in Victoria Falls. Activities in Vic Falls (Zimbabwe) that are open now include: • Wildlife activities – Game drives in the Zambezi National Park and the Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve. Elephant and lion encounters, as well as fishing on the river and horse-back safaris in the park. • Adrenaline activities – Rafting and jetboat below the falls. All the highwire activities at the bridge and the lookout. Not an adrenaline activity, but the Historic Bridge Tour is also open. • Scenic activities – Viewing of the Victoria Falls and flights. Certain river cruises from the morning to dinner cruises. • Boma dinners – These are open on certain days of the week. • Specialist safaris – photographic boat safaris on the Zambezi River, at discounted rates! Most of the activities in Livingstone (Zambia) are open, like the popular Livingstone Island and Devils Pool, some river cruises, rhino walk and white-water rafting. Certain operators took the opportunity during the quiet months to re-evaluate and revamp their offerings. Pure Africa’s cruise vessels the Zambezi Reflections, Kalunda and the Zambezi Explorer got serious fresh looks, and they have opened up a new Eatery venue on the side of the Zambezi River. New lodges and hotels have come up including Nkosi Lodge (sister lodge to Bayete and Phezulu lodges) and The Palm River Hotel (sister to Ilala Lodge). Be sure to check out special offers on accommodation in Victoria Falls. Restaurants in town are also open, including the Lookout Café, 3 Monkeys and Little Monkey, Nam Took, River Brewing Co, and the lodge and hotel restaurants. Even more exciting is that new ones have been established in town – Ellie Café at the Elephant’s Walk Mall and Reynardo’s in the low density residential area. All in all, while we might be missing some of the activities and experiences that we were so used to, what's happening so far has us a lot more excited, and we look forward to welcoming everyone and sharing in the magic of Victoria Falls and the surrounding areas. It is a great time to travel as it is not as busy as it usually is at this time of the year, and so you may find yourself in almost exclusive experiences in some instances.
