This is an amazing new event, operated by the organisers of the successful Victoria Falls Marathon, Zambezi Man multi event, and the Kilimanjaro Marathon. Riding through some of the most scenic areas starting with a ride along the length of the Zambezi from the Botswana border to the Victoria Falls, the next day is through the Woodlands Safari area, private game area and rural villages finally on the last day a ride along the Zambezi River Gorge below the Falls.
The ride comprises of a combination of single track, rural roads and a small amount of tar (near the hotels). Note that most of these areas are not available to any MTB rider, and are unique to this event.
The event is fully backed up, marshalled, and controlled to world standards, and is a must for all MTB cyclists and adventurers. The accommodation which is included in the package is in the 4 star Elephant Hills Hotel.
Supporters are also catered for, and included in their package they have transfers to view the event on the route from selected sites, as well as take in all the extra options available in the area.
Add on a few days and enjoy Helicopter flights, Canoeing, Rafting, Elephant back safaris or for the wild at heart some gorge swinging or bungi jumping. Packages are available through us. Enquire here.
The ride is open to single riders and team riders (2 people). The single riders will only be allowed to ride on day 3 and will start behind the team riders. Prize money & medals are only open to team riders.
Victoria Falls Mountain Bike Challenge - Quick Brief
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS - THREE STAGE EVENT
Day 1 - Rider registration starts at 09h00 at Elephant Hills Hotel - Registration closes at 15h00 - Pre-race Briefing at Elephant Hills at 17h00 - Accommodation at Elephant Hills on bed and breakfast basis
Day 2 - ride section plus supporters transfers - Accommodation at Elephant Hills on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis
Day 3 - ride section plus supporters transfers - Accommodation at Elephant Hills on dinner, bed and breakfast basis
Day 4 - ride section pus supporters transfers - Accommodation at Elephant Hills on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis - Gala dinner where prize giving will be done
Day 5 – Trip ends
Every night at dinner there will be a presentation on the following days cycle section and a short clip of the days racing. With the final night viewing incorporating highlights of the 3 days.
Detailed Itinerary
| Day 1
|
Registration at the Elephant Hills Resort. Registrations starts at 0900hrs and closes at 1500hrs with a pre race briefing at 1700hrs The Elephant Hills Hotel boasts an 18-hole championship golf course. Nowhere in the world is there such an experience for golfers. The Hotels tranquil evergreen setting on the upper Zambezi River belies the might of the Victoria Falls just three kilometres away. The Elephant Hills Hotel Zimbabwe contains 276 luxury rooms, 11 executive suites, one deluxe suite and one presidential suite which are served by three restaurants and two bars, and the whole complex is expertly run by African Sun's dedicated staff. |
| Day 2
|
All bikes will be transported to the Kazungula Border post between Zimbabwe and Botswana. All participants will be transferred to the starting point in luxury Buses.
The ride starts at the Kazungula border post and the route follows the Zambezi river, going through the beautiful Matetsi safari area then through the Zambezi National Park. This ride is through some of the wildest areas in this region and again safety is of concern, riders will all be given a full briefing and the route will be protected by armed game rangers. The ride again ends at the Elephant Hills hotel. Ride distance will be approx- 85km Gala Dinner and prize giving tonight |
| Day 3
|
Ride again departs from Elephant Hills Hotel and heads out of Vic Falls in a different direction, going away from the river into a private concession, the area through which the cyclists go today will have some game viewing opportunities and cyclists will be fully briefed of the associated dangers at the dinner the night before.
The ride goes along some secondary roads and then into a private Safari area, before then riding through some communal land coming out into the Vic Falls Private Game reserve and with the final legs going through some Forestry and National parks before ending at the Elephant Hills hotel. Distance of this Ride will be approximately 95km Overnight including dinner. |
| Day 4
|
Riders will depart from Elephant Hills Hotel at 06h30, and will cycle out of Victoria Falls through the Forestry concession, which consists of teak forests and some Kalahari sand to get the legs going.
Riders then continue on into the communal areas using mainly secondary roads and then back through the Victoria Falls National Park on single track. This routes follows along the edge of the incredible Batoka Gorge, through which the Zambezi runs and where the worlds greatest one day's white water rafting trip is operated. Views from this ride are spectacular and riders will want to stop and take some pictures. The finish is at Elephant Hills Hotel. Distance of this Ride will be approximately 82km Overnight including dinner. |
