Rhino Poaching Figures March 2012

by SA Tourism news

The Department of Environmental Affairs has announced that 135 rhinos have been lost to rhino poaching this year.

The Kruger National Park (KNP) continues to be the biggest victim of rhino poaching with a total of 75 rhinos killed this year, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 18, Limpopo with 17 and the North West province with 15.

"The Department is encouraged by the increasing number of arrests and convictions made to combat rhino poaching", said spokesperson Albi Modise. Since January, 89 suspects have been arrested.

Last week, a suspected poacher was shot dead in the KNP and two suspects arrested. In addition, a fifth KNP official stationed at the Pretoriuskop section of the park has been arrested.

SANParks is working in conjunction with SAPS to determine if links exist between other internal suspects in relation to the two rhino killed in Pretoriuskop last month.
Modise urged South Africans to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs that could lead to arrest and prevention of illegal killing to 0800 205 005
