South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs reports that 171 rhinos have been killed between January and April 2012.

Tourism Update reported on April 10 that the figure stood at 159, meaning that a further 12 rhinos have been killed since those figures were published.

“According to statistics, rhino poachers are targeting the Kruger National Park, which has suffered a loss of 103 rhinos,” said Department of Environmental Affairs spokesman, Albi Modise.

Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal and the North West province are also prime focuses for poachers, with a total of 58 rhinos killed – 23 in Limpopo, 18 in KwaZulu Natal and 17 in North West.

“The department wishes to once again urge South Africans to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs that could lead to arrest and prevention of illegal killing to 0800 205 005,” he said.
