Miombo Safari CampMiombo Safari Camp is so close to the Hwange National Park boundary that game moves through their small private concession, with elephants, buffalo and on occasion the resident lion pride coming to drink at the waterhole in front of the campIntroductionMiombo Safari Camp is located just outside the Hwange National Park, on the tar road between the local town Dete and the Main park entrance. As the crow flies, it is only a few kilometres from the National Park boundary and as Hwange has no boundary fences, wildlife moves in and out of the park freely. Miombo being positioned so close to the boundary means that game can and does move through their private concession, with elephants, buffalo and on occasion the resident lion pride coming to drink at the waterhole in front of the camp. So Miombo is still a wild camp but clients should be aware that it is positioned on a main road and not far from the town of Dete. This location is reflected in the price, as this camp offers more reasonable rates than some other camps situated inside the National Park. For a full safari experience, you will need to drive the 20 kilometres to enter the Hwange National Park via the main entrance gate. This trip along the tar road can be a game drive in itself as various species of animal are often seen. The Hwange National park speaks for itself and although you will not be on a private concession, offered by some other high end camps, you will still have the opportunity of seeing plenty of spectacular wildlife. The camp offers four types of accommodation. Five spacious tented suites bring a great combination of simple luxury and comfort, each with an en-suite bathroom. Raised up on 8 foot high platforms, your private veranda is a great place to relax and view the waterhole which is the main focus of the camp. One of these is a honeymoon suite. One tree-house part of the old camp, have been refurbished and re-decorated. This room, although smaller, has its own en-suite bathroom facilities and all the basic luxuries needed for a more rustic safari. There are four small 'rondavels'. These brick and thatch rooms are set further back in the forest at ground level and although quite rustic also have en-suite facilities. The main lounge/dining area of the camp is under a beautiful high thatched roof, making it cool during the hot months. The large pool is also a consideration for the summer months, being shaded under the large Teak trees towering over the camp, the refreshingly cold water is very welcomed in the heat of the day. New in 2018 is the Little Miombo Camp which is adjacent to the main "Elephant Camp" (described above). There are ten en-suite twin tents, plus a lounge and dining area. This is ideal for small groups who want a bit of privacy from the main camp, although guests still have access to the camp's main lodge and swimming pool. Little Miombo also boasts a private waterhole.
Our OpinionMiombo Safari Camp has its advantages and disadvantages - it is the most accessible of all the safari camps in Hwange and is only a two hour drive from Victoria Falls or three hours from Bulawayo on good tar road. Its rates are cheaper than many of the other camps which makes it a perfect choice for people on a tighter budget. The trade-off is that it is not in a prime location and one has to travel into the Park for a full safari experience. We recommend this camp for clients on a tighter budget who are not concerned with the bells and whistles but to still want to get to see and experience Hwange. The camp does offer game drives in its own safari vehicles but this camp is ideal for self-drive tourists - half- and full-board options are available.
