Matobo Hills Accommodation
Easily accessible from Zimbabwe's second largest city, Matobo Hills
accommodation starts just 45 kilometres from Bulawayo
Just 60kms south of Zimbabwe's second largest city lies Zimbabwe's oldest
national park - Matobo Hills. It is often
overlooked by visitors, as it can be difficult to access without taking another
flight to Bulawayo, or long road transfer from either
Victoria Falls or Harare. However, if you're
already taking a road trip, Matobo Hills makes for great stop for at least a
couple of nights.
Matopos (as it is sometimes referred to) is home to unique granite hills,
large boulders, and balancing rocks - not like any other place in the country.
It is also home to a variety of wildlife,
including the protected rhino. Not only is Matobo Hills a place of wondrous
landscapes and wildlife, the cultural, historical and indeed spiritual elements
are an important part of the place.
Matobo Hills accommodation consists of a few lodges starting 45kms south of
Bulawayo, plus a few National Parks' lodges located right inside the park.
The lodges just outside the park boundaries have offerings that range from
self-catering campsites and bed and breakfast, to fully inclusive luxury stays.
Some will offer various activities centred around the attractions both within
the park and tours as far out as Bulawayo city.
Amalinda Lodge, Big Cave Camp, Matobo Hills Lodge and Farmhouse Lodge are
popular choices.
For self-drivers who want to self-cater and stay within Matobo Hills National
Park, there are a few option both in the northern and southern parts of the
park. In the heart of the park is the Maleme area, which has chalets and
self-catering lodges. The Sandy Spruit (in the north), Mtshelele (in the
south-east), Togwana (in the east) and Mesilume areas also have campsites and
lodges run by the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority, and are ideal
for budget family accommodation, bearing in mind that national parks fees are
paid for each person and vehicle per day.
