Kariba opens floodgates tomorrow
Kariba opens floodgates tomorrow
On Saturday 22nd January, the Kariba floodgates will be opened due to heavy rains in the Zambezi catchment area, particularly in Namibia and Angola. In a statement on Wednesday, the Zambezi River Authority said the gates would be open at 12 noon on Saturday to keep the lake level within operational limits. The Civil Protection Unit has dispatched several officers to warn people downstream from Kariba of possible flooding which may occur. The excess water flowing through the river, coupled with the heavy rains currently being experienced, could place people in danger. The Met Department has said that some areas received over 100 millimetres of rain a day over the past week, and added that rains are expected to continue until 25 January.
