Electronic Temporary Import Permits - A Relief for Self-Drivers to Zimbabwe
28 January 2019 In December, the Zimbabwe Revenue Aurthority (ZIMRA) launched an electronic program to handle applications for Temporary Import Permits (TIP's). TIP's are required when visitors to Zimbabwe bring foreign registered vehicles into Zimbabwe, and the application process can be a nightmare at the country's borders. To make use of the electronic system, one needs either a mobile phone with internet access and access to the Google PlayStore, or a computer with internet access. Basically, after registering on your phone or computer, you can make an application for a TIP. After filling out your details, you will get a reference number which you show to the ZIMRA officer when you arrive. Submitting your application electronically certainly saves you at least 10 minutes which you would use filling out the form, plus the time it would take the ZIMRA officer to register your details. ZIMRA Commissioner General, Faith Mazani, says the authority has received praise from travellers who were used to spending hours at Beitbridge, but with the implementation of the system, this time was reduced to less than 30 minutes (SA Tourism Update). Not only does this new system help with new TIP's, but you can renew your old TIP on your phone or computer from the comfort of your home or office (or even on the road if your mobile network is consistent). However, you may find it a challenge to get registered into the system. We tried both the mobile app and signing up online, and kept getting error messages. But that might've been network issues on the day. If you can get it to work, then we recommend going this route.
