How many visitors in Devil's pool?

by Angelica
(Tuscany, Italy)

I'm doing a research for University and I'd like to know how much visitors in Devil's Pool contribute to Victoria Falls tourism. It would be very interesting for my research to know some numbers. So, please, how many swimmers in Devil's Pool in the last years, each year? And, if it is possible, how much locals earn from Devil's Pool every year?

Thank you!

Devils swim figures
by: Tony

Hi Angelica

As the Devils pool is not my company I don't know the exact figures, but what I can tell you is that there is a maximum of 16 people on the island per tour and they do 5 tours per day. The Devils pool is only open for about 5 months of the year and during this time it is extremely popular and probably runs at an average of 80 to 90% occupancy. So my guess is somewhere around 10 000 people per annum but you would have to verify this with them. I have no idea what the locals earn from this sorry I can't help there

Devil's Pool Contribution
by: Sanja

Hello.

10% of all proceeds from Livingstone Island goes to the local community - read more about it here: tongabezi blog.
Please note that the island is not open year round.

Best wishes, Sanja for Tongabezi

Thanks

Thank you Sanja for your feedback. It's great to see the money benefiting the local community and ofcourse this is in excess to job creation. Maybe you could verify the numbers that I estimated.

From which day is it possible to swim in the Devil's pool (2015)
by: Daniela

Hi, I'll be there around the 16th of August. If I book a trip, will I be able to swim there?
As some comments says it is from July, some says September. I would like to have a concrete answer
Thanks in advance for your help
Kind regards

Clarification on the Devils pool opening date
by: Tony

Hi Daniela

I think maybe what is confusing regarding the opening dates is - the Livingstone Island Tour and the Devils swim - which are operated by the same company. You have to go on the Livingstone island tour to do the devils swim - the Livingstone island tour opens for a much longer period that the Devils swim.
The Livingstone Island tour re-opened on the 13th May this year but they don't as yet do the Devils swim because the water is still to high, as the water level drops then they are able to start swimming in various pools with the best one being the devils pool when the water gets really low.
So Livingstone Island opens from May through till about April - almost the whole year. Devils pool opens normally around the end of August and closes late December, the actual date varies from year to year depending on the river level of that year. This year I think you might be lucky on the 16th August, because the river level has been lower than normal - but it is not something I can guarantee you until closer to the time.
On 16th August they will definately be swimming in one of the pools, so my advice would be to book it - the Livingstone island tour in itself is so worth it to see the Falls from that angle. You will get to do some swimming and if all goes accordingly you will be lucky and the the devils pool will have opened by then. I hope that clarifies the situation for you. August is just at that tricky time because it can be just a few days one way or the other and they wont swim until it is safe to do so.

Devil's Pool March 2016
by: TJ

I have trip booked from March 12-19, will I be able to swim in the Devil's Pool? Swimming in the Devil's Pool is the most important part of my trip. I've read mixed reports about the Devil's Pool being open in March. It will be very expensive to cancel my trip, but I definitely don't want to find out that it's closed when I arrive. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Devils swim open in march
by: Tony

Hi TJ

The Devils Pool is certainly NOT normally open in March. However this year we are experiencing an extreme shortage of rain. The river is much lower at this time of year (January)than it normally is.
So it's impossible to give you a clear answer because it is totally dependant on the upcoming rainfall.
My feeling is that the devils pool will be closed by then, but the Livingstone island tour is still open and they do swim in other pools if the water is too high to swim in devils pool right on the edge of the Falls. These other pools are still a great experience and very exhilarating, so if you have already booked I wouldn't cancel and lose your money, I think you will still enjoy it.

Hope that helps some

Devil's Pool at the end of March
by: PJ

Hi,

I read in a previous response you had that devil's pool is not usually open in March but that this year, there is a shortage of rainfall and that it may be, but it all depended on the upcoming rainfall. That was almost two months ago. My trip is about 3.5 weeks away. Do you have a better sense of whether you think the pool will be open then or not? I was really really looking forward to going there

Thanks

by: Tony

Hi PJ

They are still swimming in the Angels Pool at the moment (8.3.16), which is still close to the edge of the Falls. We have not been informed yet as to when this will close, there is lots of rain about and the river is rising so I do hope that you will get here in time.

Devils pool in July
by: Tony

HI Luca

The Devils Pool/ Livingstone island tour closed on the 15th April. The island and one of the pools will almost certainly be open by June. So by the end of July you will certainly be able to do the Livingstone Island Tour and swim in the Angels Pool, which is similar to the Devils pool on the edge of the Falls. The Devils pool probably won't open until mid to late August.

Devils pool end of July
by: JuLie

I am also going at the end of July and really want to do the Devils swim versus visiting the Angels pool. Do you know if there's any chance at all that the water levels would be low and that the pool would be open!! I'm praying that by miracle the water levels will be lower than usual ? Does this ever happen and the Devils swim is open as early as the end of July ?

Hi Julie - I am afraid that you are going to be disappointed, I have not known the Devils pool to open as early as July and this years water levels are no exception. Sorry but it's still a great trip onto the island.

Swim in Devils Pool without guide
by: Shruti

Hi I read the tour company managing Devils pool charges about 100$ per person for a swim in Devils Pool.
Thats really expensive I was hoping if we could do hike up can I get a guide for that?
it will be cheaper right or can you suggest more cheaper option?
we are travelling in 2nd week of nov and really want to do devil's pool.

Potentially dangerous activity
by: Tony

They have sole rights to the island and the devils pool. It is a potentially very dangerous activity, as you can imagine you are swimming on the edge of a waterfall which is 100m high. If the activity was not managed properly and anyone could go there without the correct safety procedures there would be several deaths per year.

Devils Pool in April

Hi Tony (or anyone else that can help me),

I am looking into visiting the Vic Falls in April 2019, and I was wondering whether or not it will be possible for me to swim in the Devils Pool. Is there any chance that water levels will be lower than usually so tours will be organised?

Thank you for your response.

No swimming in April
by: Tony

Hi Britt.

Sorry to inform you but it is definite that you will not be able to swim in the Devils pool in April, it closes on average in January as water levels rise. They have opened several other pools not quite the same but similar which stretch the season into about March and then finally you can still visit the island till early April without any swimming.

Devils Pool not likely to be open by the 18th July
by: Tony

The Devils Pool normally opens around the end of August. Yes this year water levels are lower than normal but I very much doubt the pool will be open by the 18th July. If anything it will open around early to mid August.
The Angels pool and Livingstone island tour are currently open so you can do those and they are worthwhile.

You cannot do the tour on your own you have to go on an organised tour, as they take you there by boat.

Hope that helps

Angel's pool?

When Devil's Pool is open, is it possible to do Angel's Pool instead of Devil's Pool -- or does everyone in the group has to go in the same pool?

Jul 17, 2019
Unfortunately not
by: Tony

The pools are changing as the water drops, so when the devils pool is open it means that the water is lower and the Angels pool is drier.
So in essence, sorry but no you can't do the Angels pool, when the Devils pools is open

2020 opening dates
by: Hannah

Hi,

I noticed the devil’s pool was open from end of June this summer. Does this mean there will be a chance it will open early again next summer, 2020? I’m going to be travelling Africa from May-mid July and really keen to do it.

Every year is different
by: Tony

Hi Hannah

No it does not mean that it will be open at the same time next year. This last season we had an unusually bad rainfall which meant the Zambezi levels were very low. Last time they were that low was in 1996.
Although it is not guaranteed, average to good rainfall is predicted for this upcoming season, so if that is the case the devils pool wont open till August. Angels pool in a normal year opens in July

Devils swim opening dates
by: Tony

Hi John

This year the devils swim opened 12th August, can't remember exact dates for years previously but it has always opened in mid to late August. This year water is particularily low but rains for upcoming year are also forecast to be not so good. I think it is almost certian that you will be able to Swim at the beginning of September.
Please remember to book well in advance, I can't tell you how many disappointed people we have seen this year who thought they would arrive and book onsite only to find that the tours were fully booked. People have come all the way here and gone away with out doing it, purely because they didn't book in advance.

Devil's Pool - August 2014
by: Anonymous

Hi there, we are planning to visit August 17-18. Is it possible to swim in the Devil's Pool?

Answer:
by Tony

That's going to be a bit tight, although the Livingstone Island normally opens in aarly July, the devils swim doesn't open usually until late August, this does vary every year though.
If you could leave it for another 10 days you would stand a better chance. Failing that still book on the Livingstone Island tour as it is just an amazing viewpoint of the Falls and what they seem to do nowadays is swim in different pools according to the water level, maybe not right on the edge like the Devils pools but still quite exhilarating.

Devil's Pool in March end

by Vaibhav Gala
(Mumbai, India)

Hi,

I am Vaibhav from India. Family of a couple and children of age 7 and 11. We would like to visit Devil's pool preferably in march end. My question is:
1) 3 of us are non-swimmers, still can we visit and see the edge of Devil's Pool?
2) March end, water level will be allowable to go?
Another alternative we had was of May end (as per school vacations here). But I think, water level at that time will not permit to go there.

Please guide us on above..

Devils swim closed in March
by: Tony

Dear Vaibhav

Firstly let me apologise for the very late response to your question, Boo and I have been travelling through the Zambezi valley for the last 4 weeks and have had no internet connection. We are now back in Vic Falls.

In answer to your questions.

1) You don't need to be able to swim to do the Devils swim although you do need to be comfortable in water, to get to the pool you have to cross about 30 meters of water which the guide can help you across, but you must not panic doing this.
2) The Devil's pool normally closes in January so by March the water level will be to high to do the swim and by May the water is even higher so you can't do it then either. I am sorry about that, but if you want to do the devils swim you need to be coming between August and early January.

Distance to The Devils Swim
by: Tony

Not exactly sure of what you mean here, but I am presuming you mean how far is it to drive there.

The departure point for the Devils swim is the Royal Livingstone hotel in Zambia, this is about 1km from the Zambian border post. So from the Victoria Falls entrance gate in Zimbabwe to the Royal Livingstone it is probably a total distance of 3kms, you can walk this or take taxis.

From Royal Livingstone they take you by boat to Livingstone island, where you can do the Devils swim at certain times of year.

It is very unlikely that the Livingstone island tour or the Devils swim will still be open at the end of March. The water level of the Zambezi will be just to high by then.

The devils pool closed around the beginning of January as normal, they then swim in another pool not right on the edge for a bit longer, but this will also be closed by the end of Feb.

Swimming in Devils Pool in September?

A friend and I will be arriving in Livingstone at the very beginning of September 2013 as our last stop in Africa before heading to Australia. staying in Zimbabwe- want to do to devil's pool is yellow fever necessary?

by Valerie
(UK)

Hello,

A group of us are visiting Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe side for 3 days before flying back to tour South Africa. As part of our trip we would like to visit Livingstone Island and swim the Devil's Pool which is only accessible from the Zambian side. Do we need yellow fever vaccination to do this as we are travelling back into South Africa? Will our passports be stamped by the Zambian and Zimabawean authorities to show we crossed the border as I understand we need to get a double entry visa for Zimbabwe and a tourist visa for Zambia which would alert the SA authorities too.

Took travel advice from doctor saying not needed but our tour operator is suggesting any trip to Zambia requires vaccination or exemption certificate.

Many thanks

Yellow fever in Zambia
by: Tony

Hi Valerie

Good question. However this is a bit of a grey area.

Firstly yes your passports would be stamped by both Zimbabwean and Zambian Authorities and if you are on UK passports then you will need to buy double entry visa and day tripper into Zambia as you have mentioned.

Secondly - The only people interested in the Yellow fever are the South African immigration, it is an SA regulation only.
If you fly out from Zambia, The Zambians won't let you board the plane without a certificate. The South Africans have enforced that regulation.
However if you fly out of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabweans have no concern for the yellow fever so they don't check and you are completely allow to get on the plane without a certificate

Now the grey area
Once you land back in South Africa it is "possible" that the SA immigration will question you for your yellow fever, but they are not going to send you back because you haven' got one. I have done it and was never asked for the certificate. I have asked are clients and they too have not been asked. But it is possible that they could ask for it.

Sorry I can't be more definitive, but its kind of a desicion you have to make. If it were me I and I was just going into Zambia for the day I wouldn't get the vaccination.

Devils Pool

Hi,

I am planning to come to Victoria Falls in from Sep 3-6. I am really looking forward to the Devils Pool. Is it sure to be functional by Sep 3 or should I try and delay my trip by a couple of weeks to be sure that I will not miss it? Also, will the water flow be much lower by, say, Sep 20 as compared to Sep 3 thus reducing the viewing spectacle or is it a marginal difference?

Victoria Falls in September
by: Tony

Hi Kapil

Every year is different from the last so it is kind of like predicting the future, but we can estimate water levels compared to the last year.

This year the water is much lower an normal, Livingstone island has just opened on the 1st June whereas it normally only opens in July, so that being an indication I would say that on 3rd of September the Devils pool will almost certainly be open.

The level of the river does keep dropping so the water on the 20th will be less, however still impressive if you are viewing from the Zimbabwean side.

I would not delay your trip I would go on the 3rd

Chobe day and Devils swim
by: Tony

Hi Dmitry

In answer to your questions

1) Yes the Devils swim and Livingstone island tour is Closed at the end of April due to high water.

2) You can book when you get there, but you do take a chance in that the trips might be full or not going on that day.
You might also find that it is more expensive when you are up there. We can book a Chobe day at US$150 per person.
When paying in the Falls you either have to pay by cash or if paying by credit card they will charge about a 2.5% transaction fee and not all places will accept cards.

Hi! I'm in Victoria Falls from 27th July till 17th of august. Will I be able to swim in the devils pool ?
Thanks for the answer.

Answer by:

The Livingstone island will definately be open by then, but the Devils pool normally only opens at the end of August, this obviously varies from year to year depending on water level.
I would still book the Livingstone Island tour and see whats possible as they do offer different pools for swimming in at the different water levels.

Devils pool in Jan
by: Lav

Hi,

I would really like to visit Victoria Falls in the first week of January. I am extremely interested in the Devils pool and was wondering if it would still be open then?

Also, is it better to stay in Zimbabwe to experience the falls and make a day trip to the devils pool? I have a singapore passport so i think visas are not required. Would you need to book ahead to do the devils pool? Or can we hire a tour guide while there? I read that there are independent tour guides who can take you to the devils pool and you get to spend more time in it rather than only 15mins to take photos. Thank you!

Sep 08, 2014
Devils swim
by: Tony

Hi Lav

The Devils pool normally closes around about the 1st week of January, varies every year depending on the level of the Zambezi river, so it's going to be touch and go as to whether you will be able to swim in the pool. Howvere the Livingstone island tour does still carry on operating around March and they do use other safer pools to swim in as the river rises.

It is highly advisable to book in advance as this activity is very popular an has limited numbers, if you don't you might be disspaoited.

Please Please do not go with one of the off the street guides, they are not licienced, they do not have insurance and it is a dangerous activity unless you go with the professionals. They other guides walk you alng the edge of the Falls which is madness as opposed to Tongabezi which take you there by boat. Tongabezi has the rights to the island so the other guides cannot swim in Devils pool when Tongabezi are operating and there are limited number on the island only 16 at any one time. The Tongabezi tour last 1.5 hrs there is more than enough time to enjoy.

Also on the 14th July I think there is a full moon. In your opinion would it be better to see this from the Zam or Zim side?

Any advice would be great!
Cheers
erin

Water too high
by: Tony

Hi Erin - Can't be 100% sure but I think the water level will still be too high in July to do the Devils swim.

The lunar Rainbow is great from either side. I have not seen it personally from Zambia, but I have seen photos from that side and it is very good.

Trick is you need to be looking to the west with the moonrise behind you in the east. Either side has a great view along the gorge, looking west.

How do we get to the Devils Pool?

by Michelle Burke
(England )

We are planning to visit Victoria Falls from the 5th August to the 8th 2011. We will be staying in Zimbabwe. We would love to swim in the devils pool but we aren't sure how to arrange it...Is it possible to arrange it from the Zimbabwe side? Will we need a visa for Zambia? Also will the water level be low enough in early September to do it??? Any help would be good.

Thank You

Devils Pool
by: tony

To get to the devils pool swim you have to cross into Zambia, Which means unfortunately that if you are traveling on a UK passport you are going to need a Zambian day tripper visa US$20.
Problem is that you will also need to buy another visa to re-enter Zimbabwe, alternatively buy a double entry visa when you first arrive in Zimbabwe (works out a bit cheaper than 2 x single entry).
If you leave Zimbabwe (apart from just going onto the bridge to watch the bungee jump) even for an hour you need to have another visa to get back in.
These damn visa's do get costly I'm afraid.

Once in Zambia go to any of the hotels or agencies and ask them for the Devils swim and you will be able to organize it. Very easy

In August and September the water level will be low enough to do the Devils Swim.

Devil pool swim open in July

Would we be able to go on a Devil Pools swim tour July 25, or will the water level still be too high?

Devils Pool is unlikely to be open but Angels Pool will be
by: Tony

Hi Monica

It is very unlikely that the devils pool will be open in late July. It normally only opens around the 25th August. The water levels are lower this year than normal, so there is a very slim chance but I can't see it being low enough. However, the Angels Pool which is similar, will be open at that time and is a VERY GOOD ALTERNATIVE.

Devils Pool opens in August
by: Tony

Hi Leslie

The Devils Pool normally opens around the mid to end of August. This year we also have low water levels so by 13th September, I can pretty much guarantee it will be open.

Thanks

Devils Pool Opening (Aug)

Hello. I have a flight into Victoria Falls on August 26, and its unclear still whether devils pool will be open. I do have a flexible ticket up to 48 hours prior, so is there typically any advance announcement prior to opening? Thanks!

Devils Pool predicted to open around about the 1st of September 2023
by: Tony

Hi There

We have checked with the operators and they are predicting the reopening of the Devils pool around the 1st of September. Typically it is only announced 1 or 2 days before it is opened up. Sorry about that.

I am surprised as the water levels are lower this year than normal, so I would have thought they would be opening sooner. So who knows you might be lucky and it may well open by the 26th August.

The angels pool is currently open and is still very much worth doing as you still get onto Livingstone island and the view of the falls from that angle is spectacular. The swim is not quite as dramatic as in the devils pool but again well worth doing

Livingstone Island

Hello,

I am staying at Victoria Falls with 6 adults this year, in the end of July ( 27th- 30th ).
We are interested in visiting Livingstone Island.

My idea is to start at 6am from the Zimbabwean side and walk along the falls to the bridge, then cross the border and continue on the Zambian side, visiting all the best viewpoints, and walk until we reach the boat launch point for the Livingstone Island.

Do think that this is a viable option and it will be possible to make it on our own?

I know that the island itself is only possible to reach as part of an organized tour, so I sent an email to Green Safaris ( the link I found on the internet ) but I have not received any reply so far...

I look forward to hearing from you.

Some more information for you
by: Tony

Hi Tomas

I am not sure it is going to be as easy as you have described. In July the Victoria Falls entrance gate on the Zim side only opens at 6.30. You can walk the length of the Falls on Zimbabwean side which takes at least 2 hours, but then you need to exit the park at the same gate you entered.
You then walk to the border post about 200m. Clear through customs and immigration, then cross the bridge. This is quite a long walk of about 2kms. you can also take a taxi across. Then once in Zambia you have to enter their National park and then pay the Zambian entrance fee of $20.
From there to the jetty site for Livingstone Island is also a substantial walk of at least 2kms, again you can take a Taxi.
Sometimes contacting the operator direct you wont get a quick reply and that is why going through an agent like ourselves is a better option. It's the same price but we will respond to you and give you all the information you need to make sure that your trip goes well and nothing goes wrong.
If you would like us to help plan your trip and make your bookings then please send us a contact us form through our website

I hope that helps.
