By Bus to Victoria Falls
by Ian Tempany
I was in Zimbabwe throughout September 2010. Mainly in Harare, But for 4 days I and my wife decided to go to Victoria Falls with City Link Bus Service. I had seen the brochure and liked the look of the bus compared some other companies. Anyway.....The trip started with catching the bus at 0730 at Rainbow Towers (used to be the Sheraton). The bus ride was comfortable and the driver better than the regular Zimbabwe drivers. We arrived in Bulawayo about 6 hours later and were told that the bus was going back to Harare, and we were to catch the downsized 28 seater. It was cramped, bumpy and with the crack right across the windscreen, I don't know how the driver could see? The second part of the trip from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls took another 6 and a half hours, arriving in Victoria Falls 8 pm that night. We were glad to get off the bus and stretch our legs. Overall I wouldn't recommend the trip unless you want to see some of the country side. Not much to see though, unless you enjoy dry scrub and cleared land. Not the farms you used to see a few years ago. But I don't want to get into politics here. Needless to say we flew back to Harare with Air Zimbabwe in about a hour and a half. Well worth the experience! Victoria falls was wonderful as always. The town is getting dirty but the people and their happy faces make up for anything. We did the Elephant ride and helicopter ride with Wild Horizions and received a free Sunset cruise on the Zambezi. We stayed at The Kingdom and couldn't fault the staff, the rooms or the food. It was superb.
